Colors Around Me (originally published in 1971 by Afro-Am Publishing and kept in print by Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu's publishing company, African American Images) is a classic children’s picture book written by Vivian Church and illustrated by Sherman Beck. The book serves as an early-learning tool designed to help children appreciate, celebrate, and embrace the vast spectrum of skin tones within the African American community. It directly addresses colorism by fostering a sense of shared pride, unity, and positive self-image in young readers.
